LYON - regional capital of the upper Rhone Valley with rail and road communications in every direction. Gateway to Burgundy and Beaujolais as well as the vineyards of Cote Rôtie and the Cotes de Rhone villages. A bit far from the Alpine ski resorts.
ST ETIENNE - rust-belt town still trying to shake off an industrial heritage. Great football team and a superb location in the middle ... of nowhere.
CHAMBERY - Best location for the top ski resorts in the 3 valleys, Val d'Isère, Tignes, the Maurienne etc.
GRENOBLE - Quite an attractive city with a dense cultural and historic past. Quickest access to any French ski resort: Chamrousse (the Olympic resort of 1966) is less than 60 minutes from the airport.
