MARSEILLES - regional capital of the lower Rhone Valley with rail and road communications in every direction. Gateway to Aix-en-Provence and Provence with its pretty villages and over-priced restaurants. Marseilles itself is a genuine, earthy place with great fish restaurants and bars.
NICE - bang in the middle of the Riviera Nice is a busy port as well as being a hangout for show-offs and dodgy characters. Great weather and markets and no distance from Monte Carlo, the ski slopes or Cannes. .
TOULON - The original Ryanair airport in the area it has been put in the shade by the opening up of Marseille. But you can get better deals to Toulon and you're quicker out of the city and on to the coast near St Tropez.
NIMES - An old Roman settlement near the mediterranean coast there are a lot of Roman remains to be seen nearby - the Pont de Gard, Arles as well as the amphitheatre in Nimes itself. The beach resorts near here are pretty dire.
AVIGNON - "sur le pont d'Avignon .." yes, this is it. And very nice too, especially in summer when the crowds throng for the theatre festival.
